InvestDeal sponsors Canada’s Succession Summit 2026 in Calgary

On October 17, Venture for Canada gathered business buyers and the people who back them in Calgary. InvestDeal was one of six sponsors. Here is what the day covered, and what each session means for an owner who plans to sell.

Canada’s Succession Summit took place on October 17, 2026, at The Brownstone in Calgary. Venture for Canada, a national charity, hosted it with Village Wellth to strengthen entrepreneurship through acquisition, where a buyer takes over an existing company and runs it. InvestDeal was one of six sponsors, with BDC and Futurpreneur among the others.

What the summit was

Canada’s Succession Summit brought business succession and entrepreneurship through acquisition into one room for a day. That second term, shortened to ETA, means buying an existing company and running it as owner. Its organizers describe the summit as Canada’s first gathering on the subject.

Venture for Canada, a national charity that trains entrepreneurs, hosted it with Village Wellth, a platform for people buying a business. It took place on October 17, 2026, at The Brownstone in Calgary, and entry was by invitation.

The premise was simple. Canada has many owners who will retire over the next decade and too few prepared buyers to take over their companies. The summit gathered those buyers with the people who lend to them and advise them, and with the officials who write the rules.

Why the numbers matter to an owner

BDC, one of the sponsors, expects thousands of small and medium businesses in Canada to change hands in the next five years, which it values as a $300 billion opportunity. Its January 2026 release adds that nearly one owner in five plans to exit within five years.

The summit’s launch release goes further. About three quarters of owners plan to exit within the decade, and their companies hold more than $2 trillion in assets.

For a seller these figures cut two ways. More owners will sell in the same years, so each buyer has more companies to choose from. The pool of buyers is growing too, and many of the newest are individuals who search for one company to buy and run. Our guide to who buys Canadian businesses sets out each type of buyer and what each one pays for.

Why InvestDeal sponsored it

InvestDeal advises owners of Canadian businesses worth $1 million to $25 million on the sale of their company, for five percent of the price paid at closing. We also work with buyers, who use our platform to find and assess companies for sale.

Most of the program spoke to buyers, and every buyer in that room needs a seller who is ready. An owner whose books are in order and whose team runs the day gives a searcher a company a bank will finance. We sponsored the summit to put the seller’s view in front of the people building Canada’s acquisition market.

The five sessions, read from the seller’s side

Between the opening and closing remarks, the program ran five sessions. The table takes each one from the published agenda and says what it means for an owner planning a sale.

The other sponsors

Five organizations sponsored the summit with us. The event app describes each of them, and we summarize those descriptions here.

  • Village Wellth, the summit’s co-host, runs a platform and a community for people acquiring a business.
  • Business Link Alberta gives small businesses in the province one to one guidance and research, free of charge.
  • Futurpreneur lends to and mentors entrepreneurs aged 18 to 39 who want to start or buy a business.
  • BDC is Canada’s bank for entrepreneurs and offers financing and advice to small and medium businesses.
  • Richter, an accounting and advisory firm, guides owners through succession and valuation.

The summit app

Attendees followed the day in CSS Connect, a web app built for the summit. It held the agenda and the speaker bios, and each session had its own live question board. The sponsor bar across the top of every screen carried our logo.

The app runs in a browser. The summit site explains how to add it to a phone’s home screen so that it opens with one tap.

What an owner can do now

The summit’s premise holds for any owner in their fifties or sixties. Buyers are preparing, and the seller who prepares early gets the better terms. Our free business valuation is anonymous and gives you a range to plan around.

From there, the guide to preparing a business for sale lists what a buyer checks first. If your company is in the summit’s home province, our guide to selling a business in Alberta covers the provincial rules.

ETA is the path where a person buys an existing small or medium business and runs it as owner, in place of starting a company from scratch. These buyers are often called searchers, and many are backed by investors or by lenders such as BDC.
Would a searcher buy my business?
Searchers look for profitable companies with steady customers and a team that runs the day to day. A sale to a searcher often includes vendor financing and a transition period in which the owner stays on to hand over the relationships.
